👉 Presentation: “6G Integrated Sensing and Communication”
Reliable wireless communication, low-latency localisation and sensing technologies form the “central nervous system” of an increasingly digitalised world. They support safe and automated mobility, enable interaction between humans and robots in modern manufacturing, and help industrial systems operate more efficiently, securely and sustainably.

Future 6G systems will go beyond transmitting data: wireless transmitters and receivers will also be able to perform sensing and localisation functions without requiring additional hardware. This concept is known as Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC).

During the presentation, you will discover how or colleagues from the Center for Digital Safety & Security are researching these technologies for time-sensitive real-world applications, including robots in manufacturing environments, automated vehicles in tunnels and trains operating on branch lines.

As a member of a growing team, you will perform applied research with European scientific and industrial partners and be involved in the successful execution of multiple European research projects.<h1> </h1><h1>Junior Scientists (f/m/d) for 6G Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) - Including the possibility for writing a PhD Thesis</h1><h2>CENTER FOR DIGITAL SAFETY &amp; SECURITY</h2> Your responsibilities:<ul><li>You will contribute to the development of numerical signal processing algorithms for mobile 5G/6G ISAC scenarios. The algorithms will be validated using numerical simulations and empirical measurements from a software defined radio (SDR) testbed, combining radio frequency (RF), fiber optic, and quantum sensing.</li><li>Depending on your background you will conduct algorithm research and participate in designing real-time experiments using SDR hardware and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS).</li><li>Together with experienced colleagues, you will engage in establishing a unique 6G distributed MIMO sensing testbed based on SDR technology using open-source tools such as GNU Radio, RFNoC and LabVIEW for real-time FPGA algorithm design operating from 0.4 – 20 GHz.</li><li>You will learn how to evaluate the results and prepare them for further studies.</li><li>You will publish your research results in international journals and present them at conferences.</li><li>You will accumulate experience in a research field, that has an enormous range of applications from construction, logistics, aviation and railways to agriculture, robotics and defense.</li><li>You will gain experience in a group of international scientists and build up your professional network within European wide research projects.</li></ul> Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:<ul><li>Completed technical studies (at least MSc.) related to Telecommunications, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering</li><li>First experience in at least one of the following profiles: (i) multi-static MIMO UAV sensing, (ii) quantum sensing with NV centers and Rydberg cells, (iii) multimodal sensing using fiber optic networks in ground/seafloor and distributed RF sensors, (iv) ISAC using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and two-way ranging. The candidate shall describe in the cover letter how her/his CV and her/his personal interests for future development match with at least one of the profiles above (explicitly referring to (i)–(iv)) and substantiate the claimed expertise. This master's thesis focuses on the development and experimental validation of antenna arrays for bi-static sensing of UAVs using software-defined radio technology.</li><li>Under the guidance of our team, you will design, build, and characterise circularly polarised patch antennas for different array geometries for UAV sensing applications.</li><li>You will integrate the antenna arrays into an SDR-based testbed and perform experimental validation.</li><li>You will support us in developing simulation models for bi-static multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) sensing and realise a real-time measurement setup that can estimate azimuth, elevation and range.</li><li>You will gain hands-on experience with antenna design, beamforming, direction-of-arrival estimation, and software-defined radio systems.</li><li>You will learn how to validate the sensing algorithms using a state-of-the-art motion capture system.</li><li>You will work closely with researchers in wireless sensing and contribute to the development of next-generation UAV detection and localisation technologies.</li></ul> Your qualifications:<ul><li>You are pursuing a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Physics, or a related field.</li><li>First experience (e.g. gained through university / student research projects, laboratory work, internships or similar activities) in at least one of the following areas: (i) Antenna array design and validation measurements or (ii) micro-Doppler-based bi-static sensing methods. (Semi-)autonomous machine workstations are envisioned to enable higher productivity, reliability and predictability, to reduce the number of accidents, increase operator safety in hazardous environments, and address the shortage of skilled labor in certain industries. 

In order to transform this vision of the future into the practice of today, AIT is forming interdisciplinary research teams: automation experts are developing new AI methods for perception, reasoning and action. They work closely with social scientists and psychologists who contribute to the development of advanced adaptive human-machine interfaces and new concepts of cooperation between humans and robots/machines in the early stages of the design process.
